The Mayor of Kumasi has announced plans to reintroduce sanitation enforcement guards, locally known as “Nsamansaman,” as part of renewed efforts to curb poor sanitation practices in the metropolis.
The move comes amid growing concern over the continued dumping of waste into drains by some residents, despite ongoing arrests and prosecutions aimed at deterring offenders.
Speaking in an interview with the press on Monday, June 8, Mr. Ofori Agyemang Boadi said the sanitation guards will be deployed across various communities beginning July to strengthen enforcement of sanitation regulations.
He explained that the initiative is intended to support existing measures aimed at improving environmental hygiene and reducing public health risks linked to improper waste disposal.
According to him, authorities have already prosecuted about 26 offenders, but non-compliance remains a challenge. “We are not giving up. We will work until we instill discipline. From 1st July, we will bring back the Nsamansaman we used to experience in Kumasi,” he stated.
The Mayor emphasized that the renewed deployment is part of a broader strategy to restore discipline in waste management and ensure a cleaner, healthier urban environment.
