National Security operatives have arrested General Opoku in a targeted intelligence-led operation that authorities say underscores the country’s heightened vigilance against illegal arms circulation.
The arrest, carried out in Kumasi, followed weeks of surveillance after intelligence reports suggested the retired military officer was in possession of unregistered ammunition. A subsequent search at a property linked to him uncovered concealed rounds, though officials are withholding details of the quantity and type for security reasons.
General Opoku remains in custody as investigators explore possible links to broader arms trafficking activities or criminal networks. He is expected to face charges for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition under Ghana’s security laws.
Security experts have welcomed the swift action, noting that the operation demonstrates the country’s readiness to neutralise potential threats before they escalate. National Security has urged the public to remain alert and cooperate with authorities by reporting suspicious behaviour, stressing that community vigilance remains a critical line of defence in safeguarding public safety.
