Kwasi Sibo’s long-awaited debut for the Black Stars proved decisive on Friday night as the midfielder played a starring role in Ghana’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mali in a 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Real Oviedo player, who received a late call-up after Elisha Owusu’s suspension, slotted seamlessly into the midfield, delivering a composed and tireless performance that won over fans and teammates alike.
Sibo’s ball recovery, vision, and fighting spirit in the middle of the park were crucial as Ghana kept Mali at bay and edged closer to qualification for next year’s tournament. His display drew applause not only from the stands but also from head coach Otto Addo, who hailed the 26-year-old as a “warrior” in his post-match remarks.
“It’s not easy to step into such a high-stakes game on your debut, but he showed confidence and maturity throughout,” Addo said.
While the coach hinted that Sibo’s future with the national team will depend largely on his club form, his performance against Mali has made him an instant fan favorite and a strong contender for selection in Ghana’s final qualification matches against the Central African Republic and Comoros in October.
For Sibo, whose journey to the national team has been marked by perseverance through stints in Spain and Serbia, the debut marked both a personal milestone and a potential turning point in his international career.
With Ghana now within touching distance of another World Cup appearance, many supporters are already calling for Sibo to become a permanent fixture in the Black Stars midfield.
