In a bid to inspire academic excellence among students, Madam Rita Odoley Sowah, Member of Parliament for La Dade-Kotopon, has launched a scholarship initiative aimed at rewarding outstanding performers in the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The initiative, which targets both public and private school candidates within the constituency, promises a GH¢5,000 scholarship each to the best-performing male and female students—marking a strategic shift from broad-based aid to performance-based motivation.
Presenting the scholarship scheme at a gathering held at the Garrison Primary and Junior High School in Burma Camp, Madam Sowah said the programme was designed to encourage hard work and academic ambition. “We want to build a constituency where excellence is recognised and rewarded. This scheme is to show every student that hard work pays off,” she stated.
Beyond the scholarship, the MP also provided 3,500 mathematical sets and assorted refreshments to candidates preparing for the exams. The support package covers all 3,359 BECE candidates in the municipality—comprising 1,598 boys and 1,761 girls.
Madam Sowah, who doubles as Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, stressed that the donation was to ensure that no student lacked the tools required for success. She encouraged the candidates to stay focused, shun examination malpractice, and honour the investments made by their families and teachers.
Echoing her sentiments, Mr Alfredos Nii Anyentei, the Municipal Chief Executive of La Dade-Kotopon, reminded students to reflect on their lessons and maintain integrity throughout the examination period to avoid penalties such as paper cancellations.
Mrs Habiba Kotomah, District Director of Education, advised students to keep calm, understand their questions thoroughly, and apply themselves diligently.
The BECE is set to commence on Wednesday, June 11, and end on June 18, 2025. With this renewed emphasis on performance and preparation, the La Dade-Kotopon constituency hopes to see a marked improvement in results and a strengthened culture of academic achievement.
