Ivory Coast opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a narrow but hard-fought 1–0 victory over Ecuador, thanks to a last-minute strike from substitute Amad Diallo in a tense Group E encounter on Sunday, June 14.
In a match defined by end-to-end action and missed chances, both sides struck the woodwork multiple times in a frantic contest that kept fans on edge until the final whistle.
Ecuador were the more threatening side in the first half, coming close through John Yeboah and Alan Minda, both of whom rattled the crossbar in quick succession. Their attacking pressure continued after the break, with captain Enner Valencia also striking the post early in the second half.
Ivory Coast responded with chances of their own, as Elye Wahi saw a powerful effort rebound off the crossbar, highlighting the open nature of the game.
With the match heading towards a goalless draw, Wilfried Singo delivered a decisive moment in the dying seconds of regulation time, surging forward down the right flank before setting up a low cross into the box.
Amad Diallo, introduced from the bench, showed composure under pressure as he met the pass and calmly finished past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez to secure all three points for the Elephants.
Teenager Yan Diomande also stood out for Ivory Coast, using his pace and creativity to consistently trouble Ecuador’s defence and inject energy into the African side’s attack.
The victory marks Ivory Coast’s first World Cup win in 12 years and represents a strong early statement in Group E, where they sit second behind Germany following the European side’s 7–1 win over Curaçao.
For Ecuador, the result ends a 19-match unbeaten run dating back to 2024, despite a performance that created several clear scoring opportunities.
Both teams will now turn their attention to their next fixtures on June 20 as the race for qualification to the knockout stages intensifies.
