Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has expressed heartfelt solidarity with the Republic of Ghana, describing the recent military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of top Ghanaian officials as a loss not just for Ghana, but for the entire West African region.
In a deeply moving message to President John Dramani Mahama, President Boakai underscored the shared grief between the two nations, recalling with emotion the strong ties that bind Liberia and Ghana — ties that have been deepened by decades of diplomatic, cultural, and regional cooperation.
“This devastating loss transcends the borders of Ghana and is felt deeply by the Liberian people,” President Boakai stated, referring to the tragic crash that occurred on August 6 in the Adansi area of Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
Among the victims were Ghana’s Minister of Defense, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, along with other senior public servants and military personnel.
President Boakai’s tribute was especially poignant as he fondly recalled Minister Boamah’s recent visit to Liberia during the country’s Independence Day celebrations. “Only days ago, Minister Boamah graced our national celebrations with warmth, solidarity, and the unmistakable spirit of African brotherhood,” he said.
The Liberian leader emphasized that Minister Boamah’s presence was not merely ceremonial but emblematic of the enduring partnership between the two nations. “His visit symbolized the strength and enduring bond between Liberia and Ghana — a relationship founded on mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for the progress of the African continent,” Boakai noted.
The Liberian government’s response to the tragedy reflects the broader regional outpouring of support and unity in the wake of Ghana’s loss. West African leaders have continued to send messages of condolence, reaffirming their commitment to solidarity in times of sorrow.
President Boakai concluded with words of remembrance and hope: “Liberia mourns alongside Ghana. We grieve not only the loss of leaders, but of cherished brothers — partners in progress whose lives were committed to the service of their people. May their memories live on in the hearts of all who knew them, and may their service continue to inspire generations to come.”
As Ghana continues to mourn, tributes such as President Boakai’s highlight the interwoven destinies of African nations and the deep emotional resonance such tragedies carry across the continent.
