President John Mahama has revealed that Ghana’s Cabinet has approved the Public Tribunals Bill, a legislative measure aimed at expediting the prosecution of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, across the country.
Speaking on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, during a meeting with the Christian Council at Jubilee House, President Mahama said the bill will empower public tribunals to handle cases swiftly, ensuring that offenders face prompt legal action.
“What the Cabinet did was to pass the Public Tribunals Bill so that we will push issues related to illegal mining to the public tribunals. They will adjudicate faster and ensure that justice is seen to be done,” he stated, adding that the move will significantly accelerate the processing of galamsey cases.
The President emphasized that the initiative is part of the government’s broader environmental protection strategy, aimed at preserving Ghana’s forests, rivers, and water resources from the destructive impact of illegal mining activities.
By creating a faster legal avenue for prosecuting offenders, the government hopes to reinforce accountability, deter illegal mining, and safeguard the country’s natural resources for future generations.
