President John Dramani Mahama has left Accra for New York to participate in the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where Ghana is expected to use the global platform to advance discussions on investment, Africa’s development and reparatory justice.
The Assembly is being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”
A statement issued by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, said President Mahama would host two high-level side events during the Assembly.
On Monday, September 21, the President will host a High-Level Event on the Accra Reset under the theme, “Full Circle: Making Global Development Work Again.”
The event is expected to bring together world leaders to discuss ways of strengthening the global development system and supporting Africa’s renewal.
On Wednesday, September 23, President Mahama will host another side event focusing on reparatory justice, particularly international cooperation towards the return and restitution of cultural properties and heritage.
The event, titled “From Commitments to Action on Reparatory Justice: Advancing International Cooperation for the Return and Restitution of Cultural Properties and Heritage,” is intended to build on existing commitments in the area.
President Mahama will deliver Ghana’s official statement during the General Debate on Thursday, September 24.
Beyond the UN programme, the President is scheduled to engage world leaders, the UN Secretary-General and executives of multinational companies as part of efforts to strengthen partnerships and promote investment in Ghana.
He is also expected to ring the NASDAQ Closing Bell and participate in a US-Ghana Presidential Roundtable organised by the US-Africa Chamber of Commerce.
The President will further address the Council on Foreign Relations and attend the Ocean Panel Leaders’ Meeting.
His engagements will conclude with a Town Hall meeting with the Ghanaian community in New York on Friday, September 25, where he is expected to provide updates on his vision for national development.
President Mahama is accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama; Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; other Cabinet ministers; senior officials from the Presidency and other government officials.
