Former President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to participate in the 60th Annual General Meeting of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the 51st Annual Meeting of the African Development Fund, a crucial gathering expected to shape the future of Africa’s development financing.
Welcomed at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport by Ivorian Transport Minister Kone Amadou, President Mahama is among several influential African leaders attending the high-level event themed “Making Africa’s Capital Work Better for Africa’s Development.”
The meetings, taking place from May 26 to 30, bring together over 6,000 delegates, including African heads of state, finance ministers, central bank governors, development partners, private sector actors, and civil society stakeholders.
A major highlight of the summit will be the election of a new President of the AfDB Group, as the tenure of Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, who has served two terms, draws to a close. The leadership transition is seen as pivotal in determining how the Bank mobilizes and allocates capital to address Africa’s pressing development needs.
President Mahama’s delegation includes Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, and Mr. Stan Xoese Dogbe, Deputy Chief of Staff.
As a former Ghanaian leader with a track record in regional diplomacy and infrastructure advocacy, Mahama’s presence underscores the importance African leaders place on strengthening the continent’s economic institutions and financing models in the face of global uncertainty and domestic challenges.
