President John Mahama has directed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson to allocate funds for the commencement of the Blekusu Phase 2 Sea Defence Project, aimed at protecting coastal communities in the Volta Region from devastating tidal waves.
The directive comes in response to recent tidal surges that have displaced approximately 600 residents in areas such as Agavedzi, worsening the recurring crisis along the Ketu South and Keta coastline.
During a visit to the affected communities, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to finding a long-term solution. He assured residents that funding for the sea defence project would be incorporated into the national budget set to be presented to Parliament on March 11.
In addition to the sea defence initiative, the government has announced plans for a safe resettlement site for displaced families, emphasizing a two-pronged approach to addressing both the immediate and long-term impact of coastal erosion and flooding.
Mahama’s swift intervention underscores the government’s focus on protecting vulnerable communities and preventing further destruction caused by rising sea levels.
