Former President John Dramani Mahama has laid out a comprehensive infrastructure revitalization plan for the Bono Region, promising significant investment in road networks, market centers, and sports facilities to drive inclusive development.
Speaking at a durbar of chiefs and residents at the Sunyani Jubilee Park as part of his regional “Thank You Tour,” Mahama emphasized that transforming critical road infrastructure is key to unlocking the region’s economic potential.
Under his proposed “Big Push” infrastructure agenda, Mahama outlined plans to rehabilitate several key roads, including the Sunyani Inner and Outer Ring Roads, Catholic University Road, Berekum-Sampa Road, and Sampa-Wenchi Road. The project will also address the deteriorating Odomase-Badu Road, Kyeremasu-Gambia enclave roads, the Sunyani-Techiman route, and the Sunyani-Kumasi highway.
Assuring residents of timely execution, Mahama said funding for the initiative is already secured. “Funding will not be an excuse—contractors will be paid within two weeks of submitting their certificates,” he stated, adding that technical assessments have been completed and the first phase of the project is ready for takeoff.
Beyond roadworks, Mahama pledged to extend development into market infrastructure and sports. He announced a new strategy led by Vice Presidential running mate Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to modernize market centers in five strategic districts in the Bono Region, including Sunyani. These markets will be equipped with clean water, sanitation, security, daycare services, and digital tools to support women traders and boost local commerce.
Mahama also revealed plans for modern sports facilities in Bono and six other regions that currently lack stadiums. These “fit-for-purpose” stadiums aim to promote talent development and enhance youth engagement in sports.
“Our goal is to stimulate development that reaches every corner of Ghana—from transportation to trade, from sports to market empowerment,” Mahama concluded.
