Ghana’s quest for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title came to a disappointing end on Saturday after the Black Queens were beaten 2–1 by tournament debutants Malawi in the quarter-finals in Rabat.
The defeat not only ends Ghana’s WAFCON campaign but also denies the Black Queens automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, forcing them into the intercontinental playoff route.
Ghana took the lead in the 30th minute through Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, who finished clinically to put the Black Queens in control of the contest.
However, Malawi responded almost immediately. Temwa Chawinga equalised just five minutes later, ensuring the sides went into the break level at 1–1.
After the restart, Malawi gradually took control of the match and looked increasingly dangerous going forward. Their persistence paid off in the 79th minute when Rose Kadzere scored the winner to complete a remarkable comeback.
The Black Queens mounted late pressure in search of an equaliser, but Malawi’s defence held firm to secure a famous victory.
The result marks a historic achievement for Malawi, who have reached the WAFCON semi-finals for the first time in their debut appearance at the tournament.
For Ghana, attention now shifts to the race for a place at the 2027 World Cup. The Black Queens will take on Côte d’Ivoire in a playoff match, with victory keeping their hopes of qualifying for the global tournament alive.
