The Malawi has looked to Ghana for guidance on building a strong carbon market system, as a high-level delegation wrapped up a two-day visit to study Ghana’s growing leadership in climate finance and emissions trading.
Led by Patricia Wiskies, the delegation examined Ghana’s carbon market framework under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, including its national registry systems, investor engagement strategies, waste management initiatives and regulation of single-use plastics.
Malawi praised Ghana for establishing a dedicated carbon market office and creating systems that help attract climate finance while aligning with national development goals.
The visit also highlighted Ghana’s growing global profile in carbon trading. According to Klik Foundation Ghana, Ghana became the first African country to transfer carbon credits under Article 6.2 after moving more than 11,000 tonnes of carbon credits to Switzerland through a clean cookstove project.
Malawi is now seeking continued technical collaboration with Ghana as it develops its own carbon market roadmap.
