In a decisive show of unity, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has confirmed Michael Kpakpo Allotey as its new Chief Executive, following a unanimous vote during a Special General Assembly meeting at the Accra City Hall on Tuesday.
All 30 assembly members present cast their ballots in favour of Mr. Allotey, delivering a resounding 100% endorsement, well above the two-thirds threshold required under Section 20 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). The election, supervised by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Madam Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, marked a moment of collective purpose, as leaders set aside political differences to back the President’s nominee.
A Fresh Chapter for Accra’s Development
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Allotey, a seasoned entrepreneur and logistics expert, pledged to build on the legacy of his predecessors while setting a new course for the capital’s development.
“I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me by President John Dramani Mahama and the Assembly Members. I thank the Almighty God for this opportunity,” he said, reflecting on his journey from North Kaneshie to the leadership of the bustling metropolis.
Drawing from his extensive background in real estate, transportation, and public-private partnerships, Mr. Allotey outlined his vision for transforming Accra into a cleaner, more efficient, and economically vibrant city.
Priorities for a Modern Accra
Mr. Allotey faces significant challenges as he takes the helm of the AMA, including urban congestion, waste management, housing shortages, and youth unemployment. He acknowledged these hurdles in his speech, promising innovative solutions and a results-oriented approach.
“As we reset Accra, we must focus on sustainable development, economic growth, and social equity. This city deserves a leadership that is both bold and compassionate, ready to tackle its most pressing issues,” he said.
Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, the Greater Accra representative on the Council of State, echoed this sentiment, calling for visionary leadership that prioritises the well-being of residents over political interests.
“Leadership of this nature demands not only strategic foresight, but also empathy and discipline,” he noted, urging Mr. Allotey to act decisively in addressing the capital’s long-standing problems.
A Record of Impact
Before his appointment, Mr. Allotey was the CEO of Our God Is Good Real Estate, where he spearheaded the delivery of over 200 affordable housing units, creating jobs and supporting infrastructure development in peri-urban Accra. He has also held leadership roles in the petroleum, transportation, and consultancy sectors, gaining a reputation for operational efficiency and cost reduction.
A Call for Unity and Progress
As drumming and jubilation marked the close of the confirmation ceremony, Mr. Allotey struck an optimistic tone, calling on all stakeholders to support his administration’s efforts to transform Accra.
“My predecessor has done her part, and now it is my turn to carry the torch. If I encounter challenges, I will seek advice from those who came before me, because together, we can make this city great,” he declared.
With his confirmation, Mr. Allotey now stands at the forefront of the effort to reset Accra—a mission that will test his leadership and ability to unite diverse interests in the pursuit of a common goal.
