One of the accused persons in the ongoing high-profile GH¢49 million theft trial involving former government officials has made headlines by openly rejecting legal representation from her lawyer, Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, a seasoned legal practitioner and former Member of Parliament.
During proceedings at the High Court in Accra, Mildred Donkor, a key figure in the case, stood before the court to announce her decision.
She stated clearly that she no longer wished to be represented by Mr. Atta Akyea, who has so far been serving as lead counsel for all the accused in the alleged financial misappropriation case.
“I respectfully wish to inform this Honourable Court that I do not want Mr. Samuel Atta Akyea to continue representing me,” Donkor told the court, prompting a moment of surprise in the courtroom.
The case, which involves allegations of the theft of GH¢49 million in state funds, has drawn national attention due to its political and financial implications.
The accused persons, including Mildred Donkor, are facing multiple counts of theft, conspiracy, and money laundering.
While Donkor did not disclose the reasons behind her decision to withdraw from Mr. Atta Akyea’s legal services, court observers suggest the move could indicate internal disagreements among the accused or a shift in legal strategy.
Mr. Atta Akyea, known for his high-profile legal and political career, did not publicly comment on the development during the court session.
The judge, acknowledging Donkor’s request, granted her the right to seek independent legal counsel ahead of the next hearing.
The trial continues, with legal analysts closely watching how Donkor’s withdrawal from shared representation might affect the defence’s cohesion and overall courtroom dynamics.
The case has been adjourned to allow Mrs. Donkor time to secure new legal representation.
