Ghana’s Roads and Highways Minister, Kwame Agbodza, has clarified that the contract sum for the rehabilitation of the Dodo Pepesu–Nkwanta Road remains GHS 683.9 million, dismissing reports that the project cost has escalated to GHS 854 million.
The Minister’s statement follows claims by Suleman Braimah on Accra-based Joy News, suggesting that the rehabilitation contract exceeded the original road construction cost. Mr. Agbodza urged the public to disregard such “misinformation” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upgrading the national road network.
The 46km Dodo Pepesu–Nkwanta stretch, part of the Eastern Corridor (N2), is a key north–south transport artery for goods and commuters. Originally completed in 2015, the road had suffered significant deterioration due to traffic, weather, and lack of major maintenance.
The GHS 683.9 million rehabilitation project, awarded in 2025, is a full-scale upgrade rather than routine maintenance. It includes removing damaged pavement layers, constructing U-drains and trap drains to manage water, reinforcing the sub-base and crushed rock base, and applying asphaltic concrete surfacing. Road signage, markings, and safety features will also be installed to enhance traffic management and road safety.
Upon completion, the rehabilitation is expected to improve travel times, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, and provide a safer and more durable route for all road users, reinforcing the strategic importance of the Eastern Corridor for regional trade and mobility.
Mr. Agbodza warned that “relentless efforts to scandalise” the project would not deter the government from completing essential infrastructure works in the country.
