Parliament’s Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has voiced urgent calls for accountability following the violent clashes that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run election on July 11, 2025.
Speaking in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin condemned the attacks that resulted in multiple injuries, including to high-profile political figures. He highlighted the physical assault on former MP Hawa Koomson at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station as a particularly troubling example.
Other victims of the violence included Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who was reportedly severely beaten, and NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who sustained facial injuries.
The Minority Leader demanded a thorough investigation into the events and immediate prosecution of those responsible, warning against any tolerance of political violence in Ghana’s democratic processes.
He stressed the need for security agencies and the government to take swift and firm action to prevent a repeat of such incidents, emphasizing that Ghana must maintain the integrity and peaceful nature of its elections.
Afenyo-Markin also called for an official apology from the government to the victims, underscoring the necessity of justice and transparency to restore public confidence in the electoral system.
