Former Ghana international, Mohammed Polo, has expressed strong confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the team has no excuse for missing out this time. Polo, a football legend, believes that with the expanded slots for African teams, Ghana’s chances of qualifying have significantly improved.
Polo’s remarks come as the Black Stars continue their World Cup qualification campaign with a positive momentum. He highlighted that the increase in African spots, from five to nine, gives the team a better opportunity to secure qualification. “There is no reason why they should miss out,” Polo emphasized. “With nine slots, this is their chance, and they must take full advantage of it.”
The former footballer also urged the current players to carry forward the legacy of past Ghanaian football greats. “The younger generation must understand the weight of the legacy they inherit. It is essential that they honor what has been left behind and do everything in their power to build on it,” Polo said. “The Black Stars’ goal should be to qualify for the World Cup and make their mark. They’ve shown they can perform on the world stage before, and this is their time to deliver once again.”
He also referenced the Black Stars’ near miss in 2010 when they came close to reaching the World Cup semifinals, pointing out that although Morocco’s recent achievements have raised the bar, Ghana still has the potential to do even better. Polo warned against a repeat of Ghana’s disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in two decades, urging the players to focus on unity and dedication to avoid such setbacks in future.
Currently, the Black Stars are leading their World Cup qualification group, sitting three points clear of second-place Comoros, with four more games still to play. The team’s recent wins over Chad and Madagascar have bolstered their hopes, and Polo is optimistic that the team can maintain their momentum.
Polo’s call to action is clear: the Black Stars must come together as a cohesive unit, not just to represent Ghana, but to honor their personal careers and the proud footballing tradition of the nation. With the opportunity for World Cup qualification firmly within their grasp, Polo believes there’s no room for complacency.
