In a landmark move to safeguard the financial well-being of its mobile money agents, MTN Mobile Money Limited, in collaboration with Sanlam Allianz and AYo Intermediaries Ghana, has introduced an upgraded insurance scheme offering comprehensive coverage at no cost to agents.
The initiative, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), underscores MTN’s commitment to agent welfare, ensuring protection against life’s uncertainties, including death, critical illness, permanent disability, and hospitalization.
Addressing stakeholders at the signing ceremony, Abdul Razak Ali, Chief Commercial and Mobile Money Officer of MTN Mobile Money Limited, revealed that the company has been offering insurance coverage for its agents since 2020. However, following engagements with agents, MTN identified areas for improvement and worked with its partners to enhance the policy.
“The revised policy extends beyond life insurance to include critical illness and permanent disability benefits, ensuring broader financial security for our agents,” he stated.
Crucially, MTN Mobile Money has already paid an annual premium exceeding GHS 500,000, making the insurance completely free for agents. Those seeking additional coverage can opt for a top-up policy.
Under the enhanced scheme, agents receive:
- GHS 20,000 as a life insurance benefit in the event of death.
- GHS 25,000 for permanent disability.
- GHS 5,000 for hospitalization expenses.
- GHS 10,000 for critical illnesses such as stroke or cancer.
In the event of an agent’s death, benefits are paid directly to their surviving family members, reinforcing the scheme’s role in providing financial stability for dependents.
Ben-Ahmed Tawiah, CEO and Country Lead of Sanlam Allianz Life Insurance Ghana, hailed the initiative as a step towards financial empowerment for mobile money agents across all 16 regions.
“This insurance scheme aligns perfectly with our mission of helping individuals achieve financial security. Agents can now work with confidence, knowing they have a safety net in place,” he remarked.
Francis Gota, CEO of AYo Ghana, also emphasized the scheme’s significance, describing it as a “bold statement of appreciation and commitment” to the agents who serve as a vital link in Ghana’s financial ecosystem.
Recognizing the risk of fraudulent claims in the insurance industry, the partners have implemented strict verification measures.
“All claims go through a rigorous validation process,” Tawiah explained. “MTN Mobile Money serves as the policyholder, Sanlam Allianz underwrites the policy, and AYo Ghana provides intermediary services. This structure ensures only genuine claims are processed.”
Gota encouraged mobile money agents to recognize the long-term benefits of the policy.
“Life is unpredictable. This insurance policy ensures that if misfortune strikes—be it illness, disability, or even death—financial support is available to ease the burden,” he noted.
Quoting former British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, he urged agents to “hope for the best but prepare for the worst,” emphasizing that this policy guarantees protection in the face of uncertainty.
The partnership between MTN Mobile Money, Sanlam Allianz, and AYo Ghana sets a benchmark for corporate responsibility in the financial sector. By proactively addressing agent welfare and ensuring financial security, the initiative strengthens the mobile money ecosystem while demonstrating a deep-seated commitment to the individuals who drive its success.
With its structured claims validation process and focus on continuous improvement, the enhanced insurance scheme not only protects agents but also serves as a model for other financial institutions looking to support their workforce effectively.
