Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, has called on all road users to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent accidents and save lives ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.
Speaking on Monday during a visit by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) management to his residence in Accra, Sheikh Sharubutu emphasised that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians to remain disciplined.
“We call on everyone to be cautious on the roads to improve safety and peace, especially ahead of the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr,” he said, highlighting that safeguarding lives contributes directly to national development.
The Chief Imam also prayed for guidance and protection for the nation, appealing for peace and harmony among all citizens regardless of faith. “There is no difference between Muslims and Christians; we all proceed from one father, Adam. Let us live in peace and love each other,” he added.
He commended the NRSA for its efforts to reduce road crashes and cautioned motorists against reckless driving behaviours such as unlawful overtaking and ignoring traffic rules.
Mr Joshua Quist, Greater Accra Regional Director of the NRSA, noted that the Chief Imam has long served as a road safety ambassador and remains a vital partner in public education efforts. He expressed concern over the rising trend of traffic-related fatalities, citing an increase from 2,494 deaths in 2024 to 2,949 currently. Pedestrian knockdowns also rose from 2,394 to 2,561 over the same period.
Motorcycle-related accidents were highlighted as a leading cause of fatalities, with 226 out of 420 deaths in the Greater Accra Region in 2025 linked to motorcycles, representing about 54 per cent.
The NRSA pledged continued collaboration with the Chief Imam and other stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns and reduce crashes, injuries, and deaths on the roads. During the visit, the delegation presented GH¢5,000 and assorted items to support Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations and requested prayers for improved road safety nationwide.
Sheikh Sharubutu concluded by offering prayers for the nation and for safer roads during the festive season.
