Ghana’s governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has entered into a cooperation agreement with Russia’s ruling United Russia, aimed at deepening party-to-party relations and expanding political collaboration across Africa.
The agreement was signed on June 25, 2026, in Saint Petersburg during a meeting of the Standing Committee of the “For the Freedom of Nations!” Movement, marking a new phase in relations between the two political organisations.
The signing followed discussions between Andrei Klimov, a member of the Supreme Council Bureau of United Russia, and the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
Both sides acknowledged increasing engagement between Ghana and Russia at the parliamentary level and agreed to broaden cooperation between their political structures.
During the talks, Mr. Asiedu Nketia referenced Russia’s historical role as the successor to the Soviet Union in supporting anti-colonial movements, reaffirming the NDC’s commitment to the principles of the “For the Freedom of Nations!” initiative.
The two parties also committed to strengthening cooperation among political parties across Africa, with particular focus on West Africa, as part of efforts to enhance regional political dialogue.
They further emphasised the importance of closer political engagement ahead of the upcoming Russia–Africa Summit, describing it as a key platform for expanding ties between Russia and African nations.
The agreement is expected to deepen ongoing political exchanges between the NDC and United Russia, building on existing diplomatic and parliamentary relations between Ghana and the Russian Federation.
