Newmont Ahafo South Mine is targeting gold production of just over 600,000 ounces in 2025, a significant output, though lower than the over 800,000 ounces produced in 2024.
The projection was announced by Mr. Alex Kofi Annin, General Manager of the Newmont Ahafo South Mine, during a two-day working visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources to the mine site at Kenyasi.
Mr. Annin highlighted that since the commencement of operations in 2006, the mine has produced a cumulative 9.6 million ounces of gold as of the end of last year. He emphasized that through these production levels, both the government and local communities have continued to benefit substantially.
In 2024 alone, the Ahafo South Mine paid GH₵7.5 billion in taxes, contributing to a total of GH₵9.7 billion in tax revenue from Newmont’s operations across Ghana.
“As the leading gold producer in Ghana, we remain committed to responsible mining practices, regulatory compliance, and creating shared value for all stakeholders,” Mr. Annin stated. He added that Newmont operates under the highest national and international environmental standards, ensuring responsible resource development in a safe and sustainable manner.
He further noted that the Ghana Chamber of Mines recently recognized the Ahafo Mine for its outstanding achievements in decarbonization and innovation, reinforcing the mine’s leadership in sustainable mining practices.
The visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee, led by Chairman Alhaji Collins Dauda, was aimed at gaining first-hand insight into the operations of the Ahafo South Mine and progress on the Ahafo North Project.
At the Ahafo North Project, Mr. Charles Bissue, General Manager, guided the Committee through the ongoing development works. The greenfield project, which consists of seven mineralized areas and 15 potential gold deposits, is expected to enter commercial production in the third quarter of 2025.
Chairman Alhaji Dauda commended Newmont’s efforts and urged the management team to accelerate work on the Ahafo North project, highlighting its potential to further boost Ghana’s mineral output and economic growth.
The working visit was facilitated by the Ghana Chamber of Mines, further strengthening the collaboration between government, industry, and communities in Ghana’s extractive sector.
