Ms Maalu Bernice Tantuo, a Senior Staff Midwifery Officer at Nahuyili Health Centre, emerged as the Northern Regional Best Midwife during a national awards ceremony held in Tamale to mark this year’s International Day of the Midwife.
The ceremony, organised by the Ghana Registered Midwives Association in partnership with the Ministry of Health and supported by United Nations Population Fund and other partners, honoured exceptional midwives from all 16 regions and major teaching hospitals for their outstanding contributions to maternal and newborn healthcare.
Ms Tantuo described the recognition as a major motivation to continue providing quality care to mothers and newborns and praised organisers for introducing an initiative that rewards excellence in the profession.
Beyond the celebration, the event also spotlighted growing concerns about Ghana’s midwifery workforce.
President of the Ghana Registered Midwives Association, Madam Netta Forson Ackon, urged the government to prioritise the expansion of the country’s midwifery workforce through stronger recruitment, deployment, and improved conditions of service.
She said investing in midwives remains critical to improving maternal and child health outcomes nationwide.
Ms Evelyn Amoako, Acting Chief Programmes Officer for Nursing and Midwifery at the Ministry of Health, noted that winners were selected through a rigorous assessment process that evaluated their project work and impact in their respective health facilities.
Award recipients from across the country received refrigerators and plaques in recognition of their dedication and selfless service in advancing maternal and neonatal care.
