The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has issued a clarion call for African nations to assert greater control over their natural gas resources, positioning them as key players in the global energy transition.
Speaking at the 2025 Africa Energy Technology Conference in Accra, Mr. Tameklo urged policymakers and industry leaders to embrace homegrown solutions to the continent’s energy needs. His remarks came during a high-level panel discussion on the monetisation of Africa’s gas potential.
“Africa must take charge of its energy destiny,” Mr. Tameklo declared. “Beyond serving as a transition fuel, natural gas must become the backbone of our push toward industrialisation, job creation, and universal energy access.”
The conference, themed “Africa’s Gas Potential: Monetisation and Its Role as a Transition Fuel,” brought together influential voices from across the continent’s energy landscape. Joining Mr. Tameklo on the panel were Mr. David Pappoe Jnr of the African Energy Chamber (Ghana), Mr. Appiah Keyi of Kosmos Energy, and Mr. Peter Stuttaford of Thompson Energy B.V.
Together, the panelists explored strategies for maximising gas investments, improving energy security, and harnessing technology to unlock Africa’s vast untapped energy reserves.
The annual forum also served as a platform for deeper collaboration between African governments, regulators, and private sector actors, as the continent navigates the dual imperatives of development and decarbonisation.
With global interest in Africa’s gas surging, Mr. Tameklo’s call for local leadership resonated strongly with stakeholders looking to ensure that the benefits of the energy transition are felt across African societies—not just boardrooms abroad.
