The Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen’s Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to hold a night vigil in honour of former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The event is scheduled for August 14, 2026, at the DMB Regional Office in Asokwa, on the eve of the party’s Ashanti Regional elections.
In a statement issued on July 27, the caucus said the vigil is intended to demonstrate solidarity with Chairman Wontumi, who is currently serving a prison sentence, and whom the group believes has been treated unjustly.
The organisers also said the event will celebrate what they described as Wontumi’s “unprecedented and illustrious leadership” during his tenure as Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party.
According to the caucus, the vigil is also aimed at sending what it described as a clear message to both local and international audiences that party members would not remain silent over his situation.
The group has invited constituency executives, party faithful and sympathisers across the region to participate in the event.
It assured members that the gathering would be conducted peacefully and in a disciplined manner.
The statement was jointly signed by the Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen’s Caucus, Kofi Acheampong, and the group’s Secretary, Frederick Agyemang Mensah.
