The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated legal proceedings against the Electoral Commission (EC) following the Commission’s decision to conduct rerun elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The NPP argues that the EC’s move lacks proper legal authority and could undermine Ghana’s democratic processes.
In an interview with Channel One TV, NPP National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha revealed that the party has sought an interlocutory injunction to prevent the rerun from taking place, stressing that the EC’s unilateral action circumvents established legal procedures.
“The EC does not have the jurisdiction to order reruns in selected polling stations without court approval,” Mustapha emphasized.
He cautioned that allowing the EC’s decision to stand may open the door to electoral disruptions by parties seeking to overturn unfavorable results through localized reruns.
“This precedent could encourage parties to challenge elections selectively, causing chaos and destabilizing the democratic process,” he warned.
Mustapha called on the EC to respect the rule of law by obtaining a court mandate before proceeding with any rerun elections, underscoring the need for transparent and legally grounded electoral practices.
The legal battle highlights ongoing tensions between political actors and electoral authorities as Ghana navigates complex electoral disputes.
