The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will open its National Delegates Congress on Saturday, October 3, with consideration of proposed constitutional amendments before delegates proceed to elect the party’s national officers.
The conference and elections will be held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, with 7,163 delegates expected to participate. The Electoral Commission (EC) will supervise the elections across 31 polling stations.
The constitutional proposals are expected to number fewer than 20 and include changes carried over from the party’s January 2026 constitutional conference, as well as new proposals requiring further consideration.
One of the major proposed changes concerns the designation of the party’s leader. The NPP had previously amended its constitution to make the National Chairman the party’s leader at all material times.
The new proposal seeks to designate the party’s flagbearer as the leader instead.
Another proposal seeks to change the way the Vice Chairpersons are elected.
Under the existing arrangement, candidates contest the position of National First Vice Chairman, with the candidates receiving the first, second and third highest votes taking the respective Vice Chairperson positions.
The proposed arrangement would require aspirants to indicate the specific Vice Chairperson position they intend to contest.
Delegates will also be asked to consider a proposal to appoint three additional Vice Chairpersons who would not be elected.
Other proposed amendments include the creation of Deputy Communications Officer positions and the elevation of the IT Officer to an executive position.
The programme is scheduled to begin with the consideration of the constitutional amendments at 9:00 a.m., while voting for national officers is expected to commence at noon.
The elections will cover nine main national executive positions, including National Chairperson, Vice Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Women’s Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Nasara Organiser, National Treasurer and National Communications Director.
The Ashanti Region has the largest delegation, with 1,122 delegates, followed by Greater Accra with 773 and the Eastern Region with 732.
The Savannah Region has the smallest delegation, with 184 delegates, while the Western North Region has 223.
The number of delegates eligible to participate also varies according to the particular office being contested. Of the total delegate pool, 2,745 are expected to vote in the National Youth Organiser race, 1,275 in the Women’s Organiser contest and 858 in the Nasara Organiser election.
Delegates are required to have their names on the official register and present one valid identification document, either a Voter ID card, Ghana Card or NPP party card, for verification before voting.
The congress therefore combines two key exercises: a review of the party’s governing rules and the election of a new team of national officers as the NPP continues its reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general election.
