The Eastern Regional leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned as baseless and insensitive, viral social media claims suggesting that Mrs. Mavis Kumi, widow of the late Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, intends to contest the parliamentary seat left vacant by her husband’s passing.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, July 15, and signed by the Eastern Regional Chairman, Jeff Konadu Addo, the Party distanced itself from circulating flyers promoting Mrs. Kumi’s alleged candidacy, calling them “false, misleading and deserving of the utmost contempt.”
According to the NPP, the widow has personally and unequivocally communicated that she has no interest in joining the political race and is currently focused solely on mourning her late husband.
“We have been in constant communication with Mrs. Kumi and her family. She has made it abundantly clear that she has no political ambitions at this time,” the statement said. “Her wish is to grieve with dignity, not to be dragged into premature political speculation.”
The Party also criticised the timing of the misinformation, which they say has caused unnecessary distress to the bereaved family and urged the public to refrain from exploiting a sensitive moment for political gain.
“This is a time for reflection, not misinformation. Peddling falsehoods at such a solemn moment is not only unfair but deeply disrespectful,” the statement added.
The NPP regional leadership further urged Party members and the general public to uphold the Party’s core values of integrity and unity, and to honour Ernest Kumi’s memory with truth and decency.
Describing the late MP as a “dedicated servant of the people,” the Party called on all sympathisers to focus on supporting the grieving family rather than fuelling rumours.
“Let us remember our fallen brother with the honour he deserves and support his loved ones with respect,” Chairman Konadu Addo concluded.
