With just months to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, the party’s Council of Elders is tightening measures to prevent acrimony and division within its ranks.
On Monday, September 15, 2025, the Council announced the formation of an Ad Hoc Committee tasked with safeguarding unity and decorum during the heated campaign season leading to the January 31, 2026 contest.
The move follows growing concerns that the competitive race could degenerate into hostility among supporters of the various aspirants.
Committee to Police Campaign Conduct
The committee, chaired by Ing. Dr. Kwasi Abeasi, will serve as a watchdog over campaign activities. Its work will include monitoring the utterances and actions of aspirants, reviewing complaints of insults or inflammatory language, and recommending disciplinary sanctions where necessary.
Members include Dr. Alex Glover-Quartey, Ato Hamilton, Kwadwo Afari, and Mark Opoku.
Preserving Party’s Image
Council Chairman Hackman Owusu-Agyemang noted in the statement that the NPP’s reputation and electoral strength depend heavily on how it conducts its internal affairs. He stressed that the party’s values of fairness, transparency, and respect must guide the campaign.
“The Party remains committed to conducting a peaceful, respectful, and dignified primary process that strengthens our unity and readiness for the national elections,” the statement affirmed.
Call for Cooperation
The Council further appealed to all aspirants and their campaign teams to fully cooperate with the committee, reminding them that the party’s collective interest should override personal ambition.
Political analysts say the committee’s work will be crucial in ensuring the NPP avoids deep cracks that could harm its chances in the 2026 general elections.
