A former Subin MP, Eugene Boakye Antwi, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) must confront the reasons behind its poor performance in the 2024 elections, warning that the party’s internal spirit has been badly damaged.
Sitting down with Emmanuel Kwasi Afriyie on Good Afternoon Ghana on Metro TV on Thursday, March 12, the aspiring NPP General Secretary said the party cannot ignore the signals sent by voters.
“I think the soul of the party is somewhat broken,” he said during the interview.
Boakye Antwi argued that the party’s defeat should trigger serious reflection, particularly about why a large number of supporters stayed away from the polls.
“If you have over two million people not voting in a crucial election of 2024, then obviously there’s something wrong,” he stated.
According to him, the scale of the electoral setback must push the party to reassess its structures and leadership approach as it prepares for the next election cycle.
“The verdict of the 2024 elections is captured in the results,” he said, adding that the outcome was “the most abysmal record since the party was founded in 1992.”
He said party members must interrogate the events leading up to the election, particularly between 2022 and 2024.
“What would make an NPP member stay home and say I won’t vote? We need to interrogate all those matters,” he noted.
The former legislator insisted that the party cannot continue with the same approach if it hopes to return to power.
“Who in their right mind would say the status quo should continue?” he asked.
Boakye Antwi is seeking to become the next General Secretary of the NPP as the party reorganises after selecting former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer.
He believes the next phase of the party’s rebuilding must focus on unity and stronger internal organisation to prepare the party for future elections.
“The office of the general secretary is the engine room of the party,” he said.
“When that engine room is disciplined, organised and forward-looking, the entire party becomes stronger and better prepared for elections.”
