The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a firm warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region to urgently take down unauthorised billboards or risk being dragged to court.
Managing Director of the NRSA, Abraham Amaliba, disclosed that 29 assemblies have been formally served with compliance notices demanding the immediate removal of billboards that obstruct pedestrian safety or distract drivers—especially those located near road medians and highways.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on April 30, 2024, Amaliba made it clear that the Authority will not hesitate to initiate legal proceedings if the assemblies fail to act within the 21-day ultimatum already in effect.
“These assemblies are responsible for licensing and overseeing the erection of these structures. If they fail to comply within the set timeline, we’ll go to court to compel them to act,” he stated.
The NRSA’s action follows growing public concern over the dangers posed by the proliferation of billboards across Accra, with many causing visibility issues near footbridges and pedestrian crossings.
According to Amaliba, the move is part of a broader strategy to improve road safety and restore discipline along urban roads—a step he said is long overdue.
