The National Youth Authority (NYA) has entered into a strategic partnership with courier service SHAQEXPRESS to train 1,000 young Ghanaians annually in electric bike courier services and Okada (commercial motorcycle) operations, as part of efforts to promote youth entrepreneurship and reduce unemployment.
The agreement, announced by NYA’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Osman Ayariga, marks a significant step in the Authority’s push to equip the youth with practical skills for self-employment while supporting Ghana’s green energy transition.
Empowering Youth Through Clean Energy
Speaking at the launch of the partnership, Ayariga emphasized that the initiative aims to create sustainable employment for young people while reducing the country’s carbon footprint.
“This collaboration with SHAQEXPRESS will train 1,000 youth every year in the use of electric bikes, helping them establish their own businesses in the fast-growing delivery and transport sectors,” Ayariga said.
He added that the programme is in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to legalize and regulate the Okada industry, creating safer and more structured opportunities for the thousands of youth who rely on motorcycles for their livelihoods.
Building a Greener, Youth-Driven Economy
The partnership also aligns with Ghana’s broader climate goals by encouraging the use of electric vehicles, which produce zero tailpipe emissions and reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.
“This is not just about jobs,” Ayariga noted. “It is also about creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for our young people.”
Private Sector Collaboration for Youth Development
The NYA has indicated that it remains open to further collaborations with private companies and other organizations committed to youth empowerment and skills development.
SHAQEXPRESS, known for its innovative approach to last-mile delivery, has expressed confidence that the partnership will not only transform the transport sector but also contribute significantly to Ghana’s green economy.
The NYA plans to scale up the training program in the coming years, potentially creating thousands of new jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities for Ghanaian youth across the country.
