Former Health Minister Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye has been elected Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), securing a strong mandate to lead the party’s efforts to rebuild its presence in the region.
Dr Okoe-Boye polled 490 votes in the regional executive elections held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, defeating his contender, Alfred Boye, who obtained 172 votes.
The result gave Dr Okoe-Boye a commanding 318-vote margin, underscoring the confidence delegates placed in his leadership as the party prepares for the next phase of its political reorganisation.
His election comes against the backdrop of the NPP’s significant losses in Greater Accra during the 2024 general elections.
The party, which previously controlled 14 of the region’s 34 parliamentary constituencies, was reduced to just five seats after the election, losing eight constituencies.
The outcome has triggered calls within the party for a stronger grassroots structure, improved mobilisation and a more effective strategy to reconnect with voters across the region.
Dr Okoe-Boye will therefore inherit the responsibility of leading the regional party structure at a crucial period as the NPP works to recover from its electoral setbacks.
His immediate task is expected to include strengthening coordination among constituency executives, rebuilding party structures and mobilising supporters ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The Greater Accra Regional Chairman also plays a central role in coordinating the activities of constituency executives and ensuring that decisions of the party’s national and regional leadership are effectively implemented.
Beyond internal organisation, Dr Okoe-Boye is expected to work with party activists and grassroots supporters to identify the factors that contributed to the NPP’s poor performance in the region and develop strategies to address them.
The former minister’s victory could therefore mark the beginning of a new phase for the NPP in Greater Accra, with the party seeking to regain constituencies lost in 2024 and expand its support base.
The decisive nature of the result gives Dr Okoe-Boye a strong electoral mandate, but the scale of the challenge ahead will require sustained engagement with constituency structures and the wider electorate.
With the 2028 elections approaching, his leadership will be closely watched as the NPP attempts to restore its political fortunes in one of Ghana’s most electorally significant regions.
