The Old Vandals Association (OVA) has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the nation following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians who were on official duty.
In a heartfelt message of condolence, the OVA extended sympathies to President John Dramani Mahama, the government, the families of the deceased, and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing the incident as a painful national loss.
“Our hearts are heavy with grief following the tragic news of the helicopter crash which claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians in line of duty,” the statement read. “May the souls of our departed compatriots rest peacefully in the bosom of their Maker.”
The Association, made up of alumni of the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, noted that it has long advocated against the environmental degradation caused by illegal artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), popularly known as galamsey. Since April 2017, the OVA has been actively campaigning for responsible mining practices that safeguard Ghana’s water bodies, forests, and cocoa farms.
They acknowledged the economic importance of ASM, including its contributions to employment, income generation, and poverty reduction, but lamented the loss of lives in the fight to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
“It is, therefore, very disheartening that the eight men had to lose their lives in pursuance of this noble cause,” the Association said.
The OVA’s statement concluded with a message of unity and strength: “This is a painful loss, not only to the loved ones of the victims, but to the entire country. We share in the sorrow and stand with everyone affected in this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families. May the Almighty God grant you strength and comfort as you navigate this immense loss.”
The fatal crash has plunged the nation into mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the political, social, and academic spectrum. An official investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.
