Swift action by the Akwatia Police has prevented three firearms from being transported to a funeral in the Eastern Region, raising fresh concerns about the growing trend of guns being carried to social gatherings.
The incident occurred during a snap checkpoint operation at Staff Village, Boadua, where officers intercepted a Toyota Tundra pickup carrying six mourners en route from Asamankese to Akyim Tayiman.
During the search, police discovered three pump-action guns in the vehicle — a Pardus, a Hulglu, and another unidentified model. The driver, 36-year-old Stephen Nkansah, admitted that two of the weapons belonged to him, while the third was said to be the property of his “chief.”
Nkansah and his companions claimed they were heading to a funeral, but police have since detained him for further investigation to establish whether the weapons were licensed and why they were being transported to a public event.
The seizure adds to growing public safety concerns over the proliferation of firearms at funerals, weddings, and other social events across the country. Security experts have consistently warned that the practice heightens the risk of violence during gatherings.
Police in Akwatia have assured the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and urged residents to remain vigilant by reporting suspicious activities involving weapons.
