Security has been reinforced at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Ashanti Region as police investigate a violent disturbance that left the school’s headteacher hospitalised and resulted in extensive damage to school property.
The unrest erupted after students allegedly accused Headteacher Abdullai Zakari of burying a newborn baby on the school campus.
The allegations sparked outrage among the students, who reportedly assaulted the headteacher and vandalised parts of the school, including property at his official residence.
Mr Zakari is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi after reportedly sustaining multiple injuries during the attack.
According to reports, the incident occurred between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m., when a student claimed to have seen the headteacher’s vehicle near the school’s refuse dump.
The student reportedly alerted other students, who gathered at the scene and claimed to have discovered the body of a baby estimated to be between five and six months old.
The students subsequently confronted the headteacher, leading to the assault.
Police officers were called to the school and later exhumed the body, which was transported to a morgue for further investigation.
The police intervention is reported to have prevented the situation from escalating further.
In addition to attacking the headteacher, the students allegedly damaged school property and vandalised items at the headteacher’s bungalow.
Some first-year students were also reportedly assaulted after senior students accused them of supporting the headteacher.
Following the incident, Obuasi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) officials and senior police officers visited the school to restore calm.
The head of the Municipal Security Council, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, appealed to students to remain calm while investigations continue.
The Obuasi Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu, assured students that adequate security measures had been put in place to protect them and maintain order on campus.
Police have reportedly arrested six persons in connection with the disturbance and have launched a full investigation into both the alleged burial and the subsequent violence at the school.
