The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana has urged media practitioners to uphold ethical standards and exercise responsibility in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism, as Ghana joins the rest of the world to mark World Press Freedom Day 2026.
In a statement issued on May 3, PRINPAG aligned with the global theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” while adopting a sub-theme: “Journalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Safeguarding Press Freedom and Media Integrity.”
The association commended its members for their resilience, professionalism, and commitment to truth-telling, noting that their work continues to strengthen Ghana’s democratic system and media credibility.
PRINPAG highlighted the growing influence of AI in the media landscape, acknowledging both its opportunities and risks. While AI can improve efficiency and expand access to information, the association cautioned that it also presents challenges such as misinformation, manipulation, and ethical concerns.
The group therefore called on journalists and publishers to embrace AI responsibly, ensuring that accuracy, fairness, and human editorial oversight remain central to their work.
“As we navigate the age of artificial intelligence, I urge all members to continue supporting Ghana’s democracy… Let your voices remain strong, your criticism objective, and your hope unshaken,” said David Tamakloe, President of PRINPAG.
He added that despite challenges including economic pressures, safety concerns, and technological disruptions, the association remains committed to advancing the welfare of its members.
PRINPAG also reaffirmed the critical role of the media in promoting accountability, urging journalists to maintain objective and constructive criticism of leadership across all sectors without fear or favour.
The association assured members that efforts are underway to improve working conditions through advocacy, partnerships, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the profession.
As part of the commemoration, PRINPAG called on all media practitioners to renew their commitment to protecting press freedom, maintaining ethical standards, and adapting responsibly to emerging technologies.
