Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has attributed her strong working relationship with President John Dramani Mahama to mutual trust, shared priorities and a common commitment to implementing the government’s development agenda.
She said the two leaders have little reason for fundamental disagreements because they entered government with a clearly defined set of objectives outlined in the party’s manifesto and presented to Ghanaians during the election campaign.
Speaking on the KSM Show on Friday, August 7, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the focus of the administration remained on delivering on its promises and addressing the needs of citizens rather than creating divisions within the leadership.
“We have a strategy. So what is there to fundamentally disagree about? To begin with, the issue is we are building the nation,” she said.
‘My job is to support him’
The Vice President said she understood the pressures associated with occupying the presidency and therefore saw her role as supporting President Mahama in the discharge of his responsibilities.
“He will see more than we would see. He’ll face more pressures than we would. So you try to defer as much as you can,” she said.
She explained that her confidence in the President was also based on her familiarity with him and her trust that his decisions would remain within the broad objectives agreed upon by the government.
“You know that he’s not going to do anything away from the agreed objectives. You know him enough, you trust him enough, and he demonstrates that enough,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang added that her responsibility as Vice President was to support the President rather than create unnecessary friction within the administration.
“So my job is to support him. He’s not going to ask you to go and jump into the sea or anything like that,” she said.
‘So far, so good’
The Vice President expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation between herself and President Mahama, describing their partnership as positive.
She said the relationship had been strengthened by their shared understanding of the government’s objectives and their commitment to working towards them.
“So far, so good. And I’m very, very thankful. I’m very, very thankful that we have such a good working relationship,” she said.
