The bustling heart of Sunyani came to a purposeful standstill over the weekend as the entire municipality united for a massive clean-up exercise aimed at improving environmental sanitation and promoting public health.
The initiative, led by the Sunyani Municipal Assembly in partnership with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), marked a key highlight of the 2025 Constitution Week celebrations.
Communities Take Charge
The Sunyani Central Business District, usually a hive of economic activity, transformed into a hub of communal effort as traders, traditional leaders, security agencies, and residents rolled up their sleeves to clear choked gutters, collect plastic waste, and sweep the streets. The exercise, which lasted for about five hours, was a vivid reminder of the power of collective action in tackling the growing waste management challenges facing the city.
Businesses Join the Cause
In a rare show of solidarity, shop owners and major businesses were asked to remain closed between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., creating a unique opportunity for traders and residents to focus entirely on the clean-up effort. This temporary pause in commerce underscored the importance of a healthy environment as a foundation for a thriving local economy.
The Health Imperative
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Benjamin Kyere, the Sunyani Municipal Director of the NCCE, emphasized the critical link between environmental cleanliness and public health. “Maintaining a clean environment is not just about aesthetics. It’s a vital part of preventing the outbreak of communicable diseases and promoting overall well-being,” he noted.
Kyere also called for a mindset shift among residents, encouraging them to avoid littering, plant trees, and take active steps to conserve water bodies. “A clean environment is a collective responsibility. It requires everyone’s participation, from the trader on the street to the homeowner and business operator,” he added.
Towards a Greener Sunyani
The weekend’s efforts marked a small but significant step towards a cleaner, healthier Sunyani. As the city continues to grow, events like this serve as crucial reminders of the shared responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for future generations.
As the brooms were put down and the last piles of rubbish cleared, the message was clear: a cleaner Sunyani is within reach, but only if every resident plays their part.
