Following a tense and closely watched voting process, Mr. Nicholas Kwabla Worclachie has officially been confirmed as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ketu South — a move that has sparked both celebration and reflection within the local political landscape.
Mr. Worclachie, a former parliamentary aspirant of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured 40 ‘YES’ votes out of 57 ballots cast, narrowly surpassing the required two-thirds threshold for confirmation. The session, which drew high-profile political figures including Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, was not without controversy, registering 16 ‘NO’ votes and one rejected ballot.
The outcome, though ultimately successful, fell short of the unanimous support some party faithful and community members had hoped for.
Speaking after the vote, Mr. Worclachie struck a determined tone, promising to deliver tangible progress for Ketu South. “I am committed to transforming our municipality through focused development in infrastructure, sanitation, and agriculture. This is a responsibility I take seriously,” he stated.
His confirmation marks the formal end to a period of uncertainty in the Assembly’s leadership, with party and regional executives emphasizing the urgency of having a political head in place to advance the new administration’s “reset agenda.”
James Gunu, who addressed Assembly members prior to the vote, reminded them that the exercise went beyond endorsing a nominee — it was a vote for continuity, stability, and delivery. “There are critical challenges that require immediate attention, and that requires strong and legitimate leadership,” he said.
Despite the success, some residents expressed disappointment at the lack of full consensus. “We expected a united front, a 100 percent endorsement, especially considering Mr. Worclachie’s track record and popularity,” said a resident interviewed by the Ghana News Agency. “Nonetheless, we are optimistic. The important thing is that he’s now in office, and we expect results.”
As he steps into the role, Mr. Worclachie faces the dual challenge of delivering on his promises while bridging the political divides revealed during the vote. With expectations running high, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether he can turn cautious optimism into concrete progress for the people of Ketu South.
