A leading member of the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has raised concerns over what he describes as inconsistencies in the public position of Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin on the recently passed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day, Mr. Owusu said he was surprised by what he termed the Speaker’s apparent change in tone following the passage of the legislation, arguing that earlier comments from the Speaker suggested strong support for the bill.
He recalled that the Speaker had previously urged lawmakers to accelerate consideration of the legislation, which has been widely debated in Parliament and across the country.
According to him, the Speaker had at various times expressed strong personal commitment to the issue in discussions with traditional and religious leaders.
Mr. Owusu further claimed that such earlier assurances made the Speaker’s current posture difficult to understand, suggesting it contradicted his previous stance on the matter.
He argued that the developments surrounding the bill have created public confusion, particularly given what he described as the Speaker’s consistent advocacy for its passage.
The comments add to ongoing national discussions over the controversial legislation, which has generated significant political and public interest since its introduction in Parliament.
