Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially announced her intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), signalling a bold return to frontline politics after her tenure as Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West.
In a candid message shared on her social media platform, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful painted a sober picture of the party’s current state, admitting that the NPP had suffered internal bruises and disunity following recent electoral setbacks. However, she described this period as an opportunity for “introspection and reorganisation,” urging members to rally around a renewed sense of purpose.
“We came out bruised, our individual and collective egos battered. We lie not in a good place,” she acknowledged, adding that the party must rediscover its strength from the grassroots upward.
Her declaration marks the beginning of what is expected to be one of the most closely watched contests in the NPP’s reorganisation process ahead of the 2028 General Elections. Mrs Owusu-Ekuful positioned her campaign around rebuilding trust at all levels of the party, restoring morale, and preparing the NPP to confront the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with unity and strategic clarity.
“The task ahead is urgent,” she emphasised. “December 2028 is not far, and the nation still needs change. That is why we must reshape, reorganise, and put ourselves in a good place to represent that change.”
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful’s bid is seen by many within the party as a call for generational renewal and gender inclusion in the NPP’s top hierarchy. Her track record in public service and strong voice for women’s empowerment could make her a formidable contender against the incumbent General Secretary, Mr Justin Frimpong Koduah, and other aspirants including Mr Sylvester Tetteh and Mr Eugene Boakye Antwi.
She concluded her message with an appeal for faith and unity: “With God and the collective will of the Ghanaian people, the NPP shall overcome.”
The race for the NPP General Secretary slot is shaping up as a defining moment that could determine the party’s direction and cohesion as it gears up for the 2028 electoral challenge.
