Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, the Member of Parliament for Walewale, has challenged the government to adopt a more disciplined approach to economic management, urging a shift away from self-congratulation towards resolving the nation’s growing debt burden.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Big Issue program on Saturday, May 17, Mahama argued that a government’s credibility is tied to its ability to meet financial obligations, rather than just projecting economic achievements.
“You can’t be parading yourself as a success story while failing to settle your debts,” Mahama said. “When you owe and still go around claiming economic progress, people will not take you seriously.”
He emphasized that true economic strength is demonstrated through transparent debt management and fiscal responsibility.
“To earn credibility, you must show you can balance spending with debt repayment,” he continued. “This is where the Finance Minister has fallen short, failing to strike the necessary balance between public spending and financial obligations.”
Mahama’s comments come amid ongoing debates about Ghana’s economic recovery, with the government facing pressure to stabilize the nation’s finances while addressing pressing social needs.
