The campaign team of Dr. Bryan Acheampong, New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, has strongly rejected claims circulating on social media suggesting that the candidate has employed tribal or religious appeals in his campaign.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, 25 August, Pius Enam Hadzide, a senior aide to Dr. Acheampong, said the allegations were baseless and a distortion of his principal’s remarks.
“The video circulating online has been mischievously edited to create a false narrative,” Mr. Hadzide explained. “Dr. Acheampong has never asked party members, delegates, or leadership to support him on the basis of tribe or religion. He has consistently campaigned on unity, transparency, and shared values.”
The clarification follows speculation sparked by a video clip which allegedly showed Dr. Acheampong blaming former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the Mamprusi–Kusasi conflict in northern Ghana.
The Acheampong campaign has emphasized that in the original recording, Dr. Bawumia was described as a “victim of circumstances”, and not responsible for division in the region. The team accused opponents of deliberately taking comments out of context to foment discord and create controversy ahead of the party’s flagbearer race.
“This is a campaign anchored on principles, not identity politics,” the campaign statement added, urging the public to verify information and avoid spreading manipulated content.
The clarification seeks to reaffirm Dr. Acheampong’s commitment to unity within the party as the NPP flagbearer contest heats up, with several leading contenders preparing to submit their nomination forms.
