President John Dramani Mahama is set to embark on a high-level diplomatic mission to New York on Monday, March 23, 2026, where he will lead Ghana’s push for global recognition of historical injustices linked to slavery and advance calls for reparatory justice.
The visit coincides with activities marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade at the United Nations General Assembly. According to Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s participation will focus on elevating global dialogue on reparations for the transatlantic slave trade.
President Mahama is expected to convene and deliver a keynote address at a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice at the United Nations Headquarters. The event will bring together world leaders and dignitaries to examine the lasting impact of the trafficking and enslavement of Africans.
A key highlight of the trip will be his address to the General Assembly on Wednesday, where he will present Ghana’s position—endorsed by the African Union—on a landmark resolution seeking to declare the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.
As part of the commemorative events, President Mahama will also lay a wreath at the African Burial Ground National Monument in honour of enslaved Africans.
Beyond the United Nations engagements, the President’s itinerary includes a visit to Lincoln University, where he will deliver a keynote address, as well as an interaction with the Ghanaian community at Temple University.
The trip underscores Ghana’s growing role in leading international advocacy on historical justice, as the country seeks broader global support for recognition and redress of the enduring legacy of slavery.
