Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have massed up at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra, demanding answers over the continued detention of Dennis Edward Aboagye, popularly known as Dennis Miracles.
The demonstrators, who gathered on Monday, July 13, called on the anti-graft agency to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the former government official and member of the NPP communications team.
Mr Aboagye, who served as spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was reportedly arrested on Saturday at the Kotoka International Airport by EOCO officials with support from personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service.
The development has sparked concern within the opposition party, with the NPP questioning the basis for the arrest and demanding that Mr Aboagye’s rights be protected.
The party has alleged that the reason for his detention has not been made public and claimed he has been denied access to his legal representatives since his arrest.
However, EOCO and the Ghana Immigration Service have not publicly commented on the allegations.
The protest follows a statement by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who first announced the arrest in a social media post on Sunday, July 12.
Mr Kodua called for the immediate release of Mr Aboagye and urged authorities to respect due process.
Other senior members of the party have since joined calls for transparency, insisting that investigative procedures must comply with constitutional protections.
The supporters at EOCO’s office are seeking explanations from the agency while demanding that the matter be handled fairly and in accordance with the law.
The incident has added to growing tensions between the opposition party and state investigative bodies as the circumstances surrounding Mr Aboagye’s arrest remain under public scrutiny.
