In a strategic move to bolster transparency and accountability, President John Dramani Mahama convened a high-level meeting with representatives of diverse Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Accra to discuss the establishment of a Governance Advisory Council—one of the flagship promises of his 2024 presidential campaign.
The proposed Council is envisioned as an independent watchdog body with the mandate to monitor human rights, corruption, and governance across Ghana. According to President Mahama’s statement on Facebook, the Council will produce an annual report aimed at promoting transparency and driving governance reforms.
“This initiative underscores our commitment to building a government that embodies the core values of Ghanaians,” Mahama said, stressing that the council’s independence is key to its credibility and public trust.
For years, civil society groups have called for stronger oversight mechanisms to check potential executive overreach and strengthen institutional integrity. The Governance Advisory Council is expected to formalize this oversight role and foster deeper collaboration between the government and civic actors.
President Mahama concluded the meeting with a call for unity among stakeholders, urging all to “build the Ghana we want together,” signaling a new chapter in participatory governance and democratic accountability.
