The Attorney-General is set to ask the High Court to review its decision granting former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, permission to travel abroad after his arrest at the Accra International Airport on Saturday.
Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem Sai, disclosed in a Facebook post that the Attorney-General will on Monday seek to overturn the court order that allowed Abdul-Wahab, who is currently facing trial on charges of stealing and causing financial loss to the Republic, to travel to the United Kingdom.
According to Dr Sai, although the High Court had approved the former NAFCO CEO’s request to travel for a few days, subsequent events led law enforcement officers to intervene before his departure.
He alleged that Abdul-Wahab attempted to use “false means” to access funds in a frozen Republic Bank account, an action authorities say triggered his arrest at the airport.
“Law enforcement officers have, a while ago, arrested Mr Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba at the Accra International Airport,” Dr Sai stated.
He further explained that “it was, however, Mr Aludiba’s attempt to use false means to empty his frozen bank account with Republic Bank on Thursday which occasioned tonight’s arrest.”
The Deputy Attorney-General indicated that the latest development has prompted the Attorney-General to seek a review of the court’s decision permitting the accused person to leave the country while his criminal trial is still ongoing.
Abdul-Wahab remains before the courts over allegations of stealing and causing financial loss to the Republic. The Attorney-General’s application on Monday is expected to determine whether the travel permission previously granted by the High Court will remain in force.
