Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held high-level talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine, placing the welfare of two detained Ghanaian nationals at the centre of bilateral discussions.
Mr Ablakwa disclosed that his meeting with President Zelenskyy focused on Ghana’s humanitarian appeal for the release of two citizens currently being held as prisoners of war. He expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations and conveyed the appreciation of John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana for assurances that the detainees’ rights are being upheld under international law.
Beyond the immediate consular concerns, the talks broadened to strategic cooperation between Ghana and Ukraine. Both sides examined measures to combat trafficking networks that allegedly exploit vulnerable African youth, luring them into dangerous situations linked to the ongoing conflict.
The discussions also identified opportunities to strengthen collaboration in agriculture, defence, education and trade, signalling a renewed push to deepen diplomatic and economic engagement between the two countries.
Mr Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaian citizens abroad, stressing that safeguarding every Ghanaian life remains a top priority of the Mahama administration.
