The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has told Parliament that devastating floods triggered by Monday’s heavy rains have displaced thousands of residents across the Greater Accra Region, with widespread damage recorded in multiple districts.
Presenting an update on the disaster on Tuesday, June 30, the Minister said the prolonged downpour inundated communities across 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, disrupting livelihoods, transport networks and essential services.
According to him, preliminary assessments show that more than 38,800 people from 7,761 households have been affected, while seven persons remain missing as emergency response teams continue search and rescue operations.
He noted that Ga East, Ayawaso Central, Tema West and Krowor were among the most severely impacted areas, with large numbers of displaced residents and multiple fatalities recorded in some districts.
In Ga East, 2,000 people from 400 households were displaced, with six people missing and five confirmed dead. Ayawaso Central recorded 3,021 displaced persons, one missing person and three deaths, while Ledzokuku reported one fatality alongside 1,200 displaced residents.
Other heavily affected areas include Krowor with 6,500 displaced persons, Tema West with 3,450 displaced and three deaths, and Okaikwei North and Tema Metropolitan, which also recorded thousands of displaced residents.
The Minister explained that Ga West, Ga Central, Weija-Gbawe, Adenta, La Dade-Kotopon and other adjoining municipalities also experienced significant flooding, though without fatalities in some cases.
“When you put all these numbers together, we are looking at 38,802 individuals affected, 7,761 households displaced, and seven persons still missing as of this morning,” he told Parliament.
Emergency agencies, including NADMO and security services, are continuing rescue, evacuation and relief efforts in affected communities as authorities work to restore normalcy and assess the full scale of destruction.
